FACILITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEYS

Fall 2009 and 2006 Ipsos Reid Facility Needs Assessment Surveys

ArtsBuild has commissioned two studies by Ipsos Reid, to quantify the scope of the capital infrastructure challenge facing Ontario's arts organizations. Funding for the surveys was jointly provided by members of the Funder Steering Committee (Ministry of Culture, Department of Canadian Heritage, The Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Arts Council).

KEY FINDINGS: Ontario's arts organizations face challenges in creating much needed new facilities and in maintaining existing ones. The 2006 and 2009 Facility Needs Assessment Surveys conducted by Ipsos Reid for ArtsBuild Ontario contained similar stark statistics:

  • 69% (in 2006) and 72% (in 2009) of the organizations surveyed reported insufficient access to at least one kind of required facility or specialized technical equipment.
  • Over one-half of the organizations are working out of buildings that are over 75 years old.
  • 28% are in designated heritage buildings, which require greater capital and infrastructure support by their very nature.
  • Current funding programs are not able to meet this need.

May 2009 Artsbuild Survey

In May 2009 ArtsBuild Ontario conducted a survey of its constituents to better understand the immediate demand for infrastructure funding, the distribution of projects across the province, and the associated project costs.

More than 170 visual and performing arts organizations and regional arts councils across Ontario responded to the survey. The survey identified 90 projects ready to go in communities in every part of Ontario.
