Keeping facilities operating as efficiently and effectively as possible on a day-to-day basis is an important part of owning or occupying a cultural building.<\/p>\n

Buildings have a big impact on cultural organizations\u2019 balance sheets as well as the natural environment, and reducing facilities\u2019 impact on both is key to maintaining sustainable operations over the long term.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the environmental sustainability movement has generated a lot of momentum around green building operations<\/b>, but up to now cultural organizations have lagged behind the commercial sector<\/b> in embracing sustainability in their facilities and operations.<\/p>\n

This is partly due to the complexity of cultural building types<\/b> that don\u2019t conform easily to proscriptive guidelines set out in programs like LEED<\/b>, and partly due to an uncertainty among arts organizations about where to begin<\/b>.<\/p>\n

The biggest improvements in environmental performance and operational costs come in two areas<\/p>\n
