{"id":897,"date":"2013-01-02T13:18:21","date_gmt":"2013-01-02T18:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artsbuildontario.ca\/pibi\/2013\/01\/02\/improving-operational-behavior-2\/"},"modified":"2017-04-21T14:43:23","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T18:43:23","slug":"improving-operational-behavior-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsbuildontario.ca\/pibi\/?p=897","title":{"rendered":"Improving Operational Behavior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Examining operations in new and old buildings alike provides opportunities for adjusting institutional behavior to improve operational efficiency and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>Even though it\u2019s not written with cultural users in mind,<b> LEED for Existing Buildings, Operations and Maintenance<\/b> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">LEED EBO+M<\/span>) still provides excellent guidelines for improving operational cost- and resource-efficiency in any kind of organization.<\/p>\n<p>These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instituting a comprehensive <b>recycling<\/b> and waste-management program, which can save thousands in garbage-hauling fees.<\/li>\n<li>Improving staff efforts towards <b>energy use reduction<\/b> (turning off lights, computers, etc.), resulting in improved awareness of energy consumption as well as lower electricity bills.<\/li>\n<li>Exploring ways to <b>reduce staff and audience car-trips<\/b> that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions; CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions from transportation can dwarf those directly associated with a building.<\/li>\n<li>Managing <b>landscape and facilities maintenance<\/b> in ways that use less water and fewer toxic materials, especially for those buildings located in sensitive watersheds.<\/li>\n<li>Making sure even <b>the little things<\/b> contribute to an efficiently-managed building: setting printers and copiers to default to double-sided printing can save reams of paper (and money) each year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Examining operations in new and old buildings alike provides opportunities for adjusting institutional behavior to improve operational efficiency and sustainability.
